We are slowly getting into more subject specific work, while continuing to work on our class community and agreements. It's exciting to see our class come together to work on important class tasks and needs!
Today I introduced matrix logic puzzles. These are great for getting the brain thinking and will be an option to work on throughout the year for students who are looking for a little something extra to challenge them. We did two as a class and students had the option to bring two more home.
The big project today was our library organization. Students worked to take all the books that I had donated from various teachers and families (since I'm new to 5th grade!) and worked to identify genres, authors, and series that would help our library be more organized. They labeled, discussed, and started finding new books they just can't wait to read.
We also started our book talks today and 13 students shared a favorite book with the class. I can't wait to jump in and start reading what students suggested. Tomorrow the remaining 13 students will present books to the class.
After library organize and book shares, students were buzzing with book ideas for Reading to Self time. Students started a bright green "wish list" of books to read this year. The goal is to read 40 or more books before the year is over. Students should have written down at least 5 wish books today. Tomorrow I will introduce the reading log, to help students hold themselves accountable to their reading.
By Tuesday next week, students need to bring in a white t-shirt and $1.00 for our class ty
