It has been a busy week here at Bonny Slope! The buzz that permeated our classrooms for most the week was CLASSROOM JOBS! Part of our unit on collaboration and responsibility to the community, jobs are an important part of giving students ownership of the classroom and the understanding each person has an important role to to play keep our classroom running. Thank you to all the hard work students put in to speeches and applications. Students should review classroom job descriptions this weekend, next week will begin job training and implementation.
We also continued our work in PYP on collaboration. Students worked in groups to complete the Marshmallow Challenge! See picture below for the work in action. We reflected together on how this challenge changed our ideas on collaboration, perspective, and responsibility.
Math this week started our work with the EngageNY curriculum. We'll be working through it this year in order to teach the 5th grade common core standards. The focus this week was:
5.NBT.1: Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.
5.NBT.2: Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10. Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.
Students brought home check-ins in their Friday folders related to the topics. These check-ins will be weekly and are designed to give teachers, students, and families feedback on how the student is progressing on our topics of study. Students should use these check ins to study, review, and ask follow up questions. We will have larger unit assessments as we progress through the math that will cover all the topics on the weekly check-ups.

Remember, the cost for each student after our grants is $60. Please make checks out to BSCO. Checks can be taken right to the office.
Thank you to volunteers to helped us cover writing and reading notebooks!!! What an effort. I wish we had pictures of the stacks and stacks of notebooks we covered. Students love them.
