A full week of 5th grade! We are really getting into our subjects and topics now. We have a daily schedule to follow and things to get done! It's been a wonderful week.
Important Notes
We will be tie-dying Monday and/or Tuesday afternoon. If students are careful, dye will only be on their hands. BUT- it can splash. Students may not want to wear shoes or clothing that is super precious- or they may want to bring a shirt they can change into. We won't know which day we will go, as it depends on our lovely volunteer and how quickly she can move through the students.
Outdoor School packet went home. All forms due to Mrs. Chandler on Firday, September 19th
Our blog has been updated with a wish list of books the students created. If you have any available to donate, we would love it!
Thank you to everyone who sent letters about your children. Reading them has been so helpful in starting the year.
Math
Our focus through September will be problem solving. Right now the focus is strategies for problem solving, but we will transition next week into communicating thinking clearly. This week students worked through some word problems and math puzzles. Our math puzzles connected to our PYP theme of collaboration and our discussion was not just about strategy, but how the group can help (or hurt) in our thinking process and problems solving.
Writing
This week students have had free choice in their writing time. The focus is just to WRITE- to get words on paper and continue each day from the previous day's thoughts. Today we gave peer feedback in small groups and used the feedback to continue our writing.
Reading
We have been taking the time to read 20-30 min each day, but also to focus our thoughts as we read. Students should now be making think notes for their 30 min of reading time at home. These are to help students (and me) identify the thinking they go through as they read a book. This deep thinking can then be applied to other texts we tackle- fiction and non-fiction- throughout the year. Students should read 30 min Friday, Sat, and Sunday for a grand total of 90 min- with think notes!
PYP
We introduced our transdisciplinary theme : "Inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.
