I sure had a blast getting to know all the 5th graders who will be a part of Mrs. Chandler's learning community! It was a busy day that flew by- lots to get done and organize in this first week as we set up for a year of learning.
We started our day with the supply sort, thank you to everyone who brought in all the supplies! Seeing our cupboards full, pencil pouches ready to go, and table bins full of things to help us learn is a great feeling. Thank you families!
We did some review with the other 5th grade on cafeteria and playground expectations. 5th graders are the leaders of the school, so we talked about the idea that these are not new ideas, but that we are reviewing them so they are prepared to set a great example to the little guys in the building.
We came together for community circle and did an activity called, "Taste the Rainbow" and we got to learn so much about each other! We have classmates with wide ranges of talents, favorite books, and travel experience.
I also shared with the class at this time what many of you have probably guessed, I am pregnant and will be working with the school to find a long term substitute for after winter break- but I'll be back for exhibition! Once I get my email list sorted out, I'll send out more information to everyone at once.
We also worked on our desk name tags, which took some measuring and creativity. I had fun moving around the room and talking more with students about the first day.
After lunch I demonstrated the book talk students will be doing with their favorite book. Students will work on preparing for the book talk tomorrow in class and will present their book Thursday or Friday.
We also addressed the many things we might be feeling on the first day of school and I discovered this is a class with a great vocabulary and word sense! They were so creative in coming up with words to describe things going well and not so well.
A big part of the day was getting our binders set up for the year. This now has subject sections, a pencil pouch with specific supplies, and their planner. It should go home and come to school every day. We'll fill out our planners as a group so you have clear communication of homework and other expectations.
Our day ends with specials and today we had music and PE. I'll share the rotating schedule with kids, so they can anticipate upcoming specials.
It was a lovely day! I'm already looking forward to tomorrow.
