| Today in math, I modeled subtracting mixed fractions using two different methods. The first method is breaking apart the larger mixed fraction using only its whole number first and adding its fraction later. Please see example... Ex. 3 1/4 - 2 1/3 1st step: separate 3 and 1/4 2nd step: subtract 3 - 2 1/3 = 2/3 3rd step: 2/3 + 1/4 < your adding the 1/4 back in because you weren't including it earlier 4th step: find common denominators and add 5th step: 8/12 + 3/12 = 11/12 The second method would be changing each mixed fraction into an improper fraction, then finding a common denominator, subtracting, and reducing. |
